Mazda to launch new BT-50 bakkie in SA in July
Mazda Southern Africa will launch the all-new Mazda BT-50 bakkie in the local market in July.
The pickup launched in the international market in June last year already.
Mazda Southern Africa brand and communications manager Melané Bezuidenhout says the BT-50 is only now arriving in the local market owing mainly to the late availability of a new 1.9 l diesel power train.
This engine is to be included in the South African launched range, but is not yet available in other markets, such as Australia and New Zealand, says Bezuidenhout.
All units sold in South Africa will be produced in Thailand.
The model line-up consists of three derivatives, aligned with Mazda’s passenger car range: Active, Dynamic and Individual.
The Active model features the new 1.9 l diesel engine with an automatic or manual gearbox, producing 110 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque.
The Dynamic and Individual models make use of a new 3 l engine and six-speed automatic gearbox and churn out 140 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque.
The Individual model is available with the 4 X 4 drivetrain, whereas all other models are available in the 4 X 2 drivetrain.
Mazda Southern Africa says that everything inside the vehicle, from the dashboard, steering wheel, seats and the centre console, has been redesigned to ensure that drivers feel “connected to their vehicle and as comfortable as they can be”.
“Its refined, smooth interior aims for a level of comfort on par with a luxury sports-utility vehicle (SUV), by combining sleek and modern elegance with strong functionality.”
The new BT-50 comes standard with the MZD Connect infotainment system with a seven- or nine-inch display screen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, reverse camera, parking sensors, LED headlamps, hill launch assist, hill descent control, trailer sway mitigation, seven airbags and cruise control.
“We could not be prouder or more excited to launch the all-new BT-50 in Southern Africa now,” says Mazda Southern Africa MD Craig Roberts.
“The vehicle has a long history locally, and internationally.
“It has been re-imagined and re-built from the ground up, with all the utilitarian value of a double-cab bakkie, and all the comfort and technology expected of an SUV. We are confident it will be met with enthusiasm by our customers and media alike, as a true stand-out and another bold reflection on our Japanese heritage.”
The BT-50 will come standard with a three-year unlimited kilometre Mazda service plan, three-year unlimited kilometre Mazda warranty and three-year unlimited roadside assistance.
Pricing will be shared towards the end of July, says Bezuidenhout.
