Canadian exploration company Midnight Sun Mining has initiated exploration at the Kazhiba target, located on its Solwezi property in Zambia.

This marks the latest phase of the company's cooperative exploration plan with mining giant First Quantum Minerals, aimed at identifying near-surface oxide copper resources that could serve as a feed source for the Kansanshi mine, situated less than 10 km away.

The exploration programme includes 3 000 m of reverse circulation drilling, partial ionic leach sampling, and an induced polarisation (survey, all designed to assess the high-grade oxide copper blanket at Kazhiba.

In a statement, Midnight Sun president and CEO Al Fabbro highlighted the strategic importance of the target. "This target features a high-grade oxide copper blanket, which provides us with a remarkable opportunity to provide feed to the Kansanshi mine operations," Fabbro said.

Midnight Sun and First Quantum established the cooperation agreement in April to jointly define potential feed sources for the solvent extraction and electrowinning oxide copper circuit at the Kansanshi mine, which has depleted oxide reserves and is transitioning to a large sulphide development.

Midnight Sun’s property is just a few kilometres from the Kansanshi mine gate, and an existing haul road owned by First Quantum connects the two. Using oxide copper ore from Midnight Sun’s property, First Quantum may be able to enhance feed grades and use sulphuric acid produced by its on-site smelter.
