Milan M4 metro line.

Location
The project will connect the south-west district of Lorenteggio/San Cristoforo, in Milan, Italy, with Linate Airport on the east of the city.

Project Owner/s
Metropolitana Milanese public–private partnership.

Project Description
The 15 km, driverless M4 will offer the fastest connection between an airport and a city centre in the world, at 12 minutes, and will be able to transport 86-million people a year and remove 16-million cars from the streets a year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 54 000 t/y.

The line will have a total of 21 stops.

Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at €1.7-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The line is set to open in 2021, with the first section between the Linate Airport and Forlanini FS station. It will then operate as far as San Babila by December 2022.

Latest Developments
The arrival of the first tunnel-boring machine at the future site of Solari station marks the end of the excavation work and laying of precast concrete segments in one of two parallel tunnels on the western end of the M4 line.

The machine began its journey on June 15 from Foppa station and took ten days to excavate 294 m towards Solari station for a daily average of 29 m/d.
