Mining heavyweights Tyler and Gaines join Oryx
Oryx Global Partners (Oryx), an investment firm focused on the minerals value chain, has bolstered its leadership with the appointment of mining leaders Laura Tyler and Elizabeth Gaines. Tyler joins as a partner, while Gaines takes on the role of senior adviser.
Oryx, which specialises in strategic investments that facilitate the energy transition and secure global supply chains, said the appointments reinforced its position as an emerging leader in the sector.
Tyler, a highly regarded mining executive with more than 35 years of experience, will serve as a member of the firm’s investment committee. She will oversee the technical and operational evaluation of investments while also providing operational oversight for portfolio companies.
Her career includes several senior roles at BHP, where she was chief technical officer, chief geoscientist, and asset president for Olympic Dam and Cannington mines. She also served on BHP’s investment review committee and led a global team of 5 000 professionals across exploration, resource management, projects, and innovation. Tyler is currently CEO of Adriatic Metals and has held roles at Western Mining, Newcrest Mining, and Mt Isa Mines.
Gaines, meanwhile, will provide strategic advice on investment strategy, the energy transition, decarbonisation, and international trade. With over 30 years of executive and nonexecutive experience, she currently serves as executive director and global green ambassador for Fortescue Metals Group. Gaines was previously CEO and MD of Fortescue from 2018 to 2022.
She also serves as deputy chair at Greatland Gold, chair at West Coast Eagles, and is a nonexecutive director at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
Oryx managing partner Paul Schaffer said the appointments underscored the firm’s commitment to building a world-class leadership team.
“Laura and Elizabeth are two of the most accomplished executives in the industry and leading women in the sector. We are delighted they are joining us at Oryx Global Partners. Laura’s exceptional technical and operational expertise, alongside Elizabeth’s proven commercial acumen, add immense value to our team,” Schaffer said.
