MMC procures crystalliser plant to produce battery-grade manganese material
Manganese producer and exporter Manganese Metal Company (MMC) has awarded crystallisation and evaporation plant and systems provider JordProxa Africa a contract to supply it with a crystalliser plant to produce battery-grade high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HPMSM) in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.
This follows engagements spanning the past few years and an intensive collaborative effort, which included extensive laboratory testwork and conceptual engineering, over the past nine months.
MMC acknowledges the numerous benefits of increased manganese content in multiple battery chemistries and is keen to contribute to the development of a local South African capability in HPMSM.
South Africa is the world’s largest producer of manganese ore and the companies expect the HPMSM plant to contribute to increased local beneficiation.
Crystallisation technology is integral to producing battery-grade HPMSM to meet the stringent quality and purity requirements of lithium-ion batteries for the growing electric vehicle and renewable-energy sectors.
“The crystallisation plant is a key enabler for MMC to expand our customer base in the lithium-ion battery segment and grow South Africa’s participation in the global energy transition.
“By adding HPMSM to the product basket of our works in Mbombela, we can leverage our existing footprint, strong brand and global expertise to ensure market access in a short time,” says MMC CEO Louis Nel.
“We are excited to contribute to a project which will substantially change the global HPMSM supply chain outside of China and ultimately contribute to diversified and resilient critical material sourcing,” comments JordProxa Africa MD Johan Liebenberg.
