Name of the Project
Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) Offshore Wind Farm.

Location
Off the coast of Fife, in Scotland.

Project Owner/s
NnG Offshore Wind, jointly owned by EDF Renewables and ESB.

Project Description
The project entails the construction of a 450 MW wind farm, which, once operational, will offset more than 400 000 t/y of carbon dioxide emissions and provide enough electricity to power more than 375 000 Scottish homes.

The wind farm will comprise 54 turbines of 8 MW each.

Two offshore export cables, about 37 km long, will connect the offshore substations to Thorntonloch beach, in East Lothian.

The onshore cable will connect the offshore cables to the onshore substation located at Crystal Rig, in the Lammermuir Hills, about 12.3 km away.

Potential Job Creation
The fabrication work for the wind turbine generator foundation jackets is expected to create about 290 direct and indirect Scottish jobs.

Capital Expenditure
£1.8-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Offshore construction started in August 2020. NnG is expected to be fully operational in 2023.

Latest Developments
Work on the fabrication and loadout of eight of NnG’s wind turbine generator foundation jackets will start in July 2021.

The foundations, used to support and anchor NnG’s wind turbine generators to the seabed, are being supplied and installed by Saipem, which will also supply and install an additional two jackets for the offshore substations.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (wind turbines); Saipem (turbine foundations); GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions and HSM BV (onshore and offshore substations); Prysmian Group (onshore and offshore cable); DEME Offshore (engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the interarray and interconnector cables with offshore installation); Fred Olsen Windcarrier (transportation and installation of the wind turbine generators); and Harland & Wolff (fabrication and loadout of eight of the project’s wind turbine generator foundation jackets).
