New high-density barricade offers durability during blasting

29th July 2011

Font size: - +

Diversified engineering company Unique Engineering has launched a new cost-effective blast barricade, which is constructed from extruded pipes to complement its superior virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) product.

To meet the stringent underground requirements, the new barricade is extruded using the same profile as the virgin barricades. It is manufactured from recycled material and assembled in the same manner, in keeping with safety standards.

“There is a call from specific customers to supply a high-quality designed product, but at a competitive price. The material used for the new product is far more competitively priced than virgin material,” says Unique Engineering sales director Peet Hartman.

“Nevertheless, this does not take away the fact that our superior virgin HDPE barricades will last longer and have proven their worth in the South African deep-level mining arena for more than 20 years. High-density natural virgin white polyethylene offers longer life and is of better-quality material than reground material,” he says.

Virgin material has the valuable added advantage of being nonflammable and non-toxic; therefore, it does not emit harmful gases, which is significant with regard to safety standards within the mining industry. The quality of virgin material is extremely high in that it endures the harsh underground conditions more than any other barricade on the market.

“The advantage of both our barricade products is the profile, which has been specific- ally designed to absorb maximum impact during blasting. It offers durability during blasting, as the thicker sections face the blast. The thinner sections assist with weight saving during installation, which again has cost- saving advantages,” adds Hartman.

While the outer profile remains the same, the inner diameter can be extruded to suit customer specification. This feature changes the mass, playing a big role when being handled and installed underground, he notes.

The extruded pipe is laced together and clamped, with steel wire rope forming the barricade gate. This is a successful, tough, safe and durable method, the company states.

Pipe length can be produced according to customer needs; however, most orders are for 2.4 m and 3 m lengths. Gate heights can also be assembled according to customer requirements, but are generally from 4 to 9 pipe configurations, with wall thickness varying from 9 mm upwards.

The products are manufactured to ISO 9001:2008 standards.
