Øygarden, western Norway.

Project Owner/s
Northern Lights JV shared liability – a general partnership between Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell. It is the first company to offer commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) services.

Project Description
The first phase of Northern Lights is part of Longship, Norway’s full-scale CCS project. Liquefied CO2 from capture sites is shipped to an onshore receiving terminal in western Norway, and piped for permanent storage in a reservoir 2 600 m under the seabed.

Phase 2 will use existing onshore and offshore infrastructure. This expansion includes new onshore storage tanks, pumps, a jetty, injection wells and transport vessels. It will increase transport and storage capacity from 1.5-million to more than 5-million tons of CO2 a year from 2028.

Phase 2 is estimated at $700-million.

Phase 2 startup is expected by the second half of 2028.

Latest Developments
The first CO2 volumes were transported and injected into the the seabed of the Norwegian North sea in August 2025. Northern Lights will transport and store CO2 from Norway during the remainder of 2025, with CO2 volumes from Denmark and the Netherlands expected to be added in 2026.
