Opportunities for women in demolition
The nature of the work of demolition solutions provider Jet Demolition can easily be perceived as male-dominated, but there are work opportunities for women in the industry, says executive director Liz Brinkmann.
“As society encourages more women to enter the engineering field, companies such as Jet Demolition will have more opportunities to identify that spark and encourage it to grow.”
She adds that all sectors have a role to play in fostering working environments that encourage the participation, inclusion and skills development of women.
Brinkmann notes that society is slowly evolving its perception of so-called acceptable roles for men which, in turn, also impacts on the development and evolution of women's roles in society and the workplace.
“It is positive to witness societal changes like this, and to see the positive and collaborative environments this is creating for all of us, whether female, male or gender-neutral.”
She further elaborates by stating that as the country, communities and societies evolve, it is critically important for men and women to recognise that areas of influence and values differ.
“There will be strengths that are more prevalent in one gender than in another, but equally so, these differences in strengths, abilities and interests have the potential to create teams that are stronger than ever before.”
Moreover, Brinkmann adds that Jet Demolition has a team of women engineers who have worked on various demolition projects. These engineers are passionate about skills development, training and mentoring young professionals to assist with ongoing transformation and ensuring sustainable growth.
“Our mentoring objective is to foster a caring team environment. Our business is fundamentally based on a principle of care for team mates, clients, the environments in which we work and our industry. Once you are part of a caring team and have experienced and shared that care, gender matters less.”
