Name of the Project
Port of Durban road rehabilitation project.

Location
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

Project Description
Intensified pressure caused by an influx of trucks on the Port of Durban’s road infrastructure has prompted the rehabilitation of roads in key container-handling port precincts – the Container and Maydon wharfs, and the liquid bulk Island View precinct.

The Maydon wharf will take precedence, with 16 roads set for repairs, followed by Island View, with three roads, and Bayhead, with two.

In addition to repairing the structural defects, the restoration of functional defects, such as surface drainage issues, owing to damaged manholes and inlets caused by heavy vehicles, is included in the project scope.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
R233-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to take 24 months to complete.

Latest Developments
TNPA has reported that the Bayhead road rehabilitation project continues to progress on schedule, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance port access and improve road safety.

Since its start in June, the project has advanced “seamlessly” from Phase 1 into Phase 2, with construction activities proceeding efficiently and minimal disruption to port logistics operations, TNPA has said.

Phase 2 of the project focuses on the outbound carriageway from the Shell garage to the Rotterdam intersection, as well as the inbound carriageway from Wagtail to the Langeberg intersection.

Current works include the removal of old asphalt, laying of new bitumen-stabilised material base and asphalt layers, as well as the cleaning and repair of kerbs, channels and stormwater manholes.

These upgrades are designed to strengthen the road’s structural integrity while significantly improving on its resilience and drainage capacity.

In line with its commitment to safety and operational excellence, the TNPA has noted that additional interventions are being implemented to enhance road safety and traffic management. These include the installation of new road signage, improved lane markings, reflective road studs and speed-calming measures to regulate vehicle movement in the busy Bayhead logistics corridor.

TNPA has said stakeholder engagement remains a central pillar of the project’s success, noting that weekly engagements with port users and affected businesses have ensured transparency as a cornerstone of the ongoing collaboration, with stakeholders expressing strong support for the work under way.

TNPA has indicated that stakeholder inputs have refined implementation and minimised operational impact.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
