Name of the Project
Port of Richards Bay container handling facility.

Location
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) appointed Grindrod South Africa as the preferred bidder to develop and operate the container facility in June 2024 as part of plans to drive improved port efficiency and service levels.

Project Description
The development will expand the port’s container handling capacity from 50 000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year to 200 000 TEUs a year, in alignment with the TNPA KZN ports masterplan.

The project will diversify the TNPA’s cargo profile, which is currently mainly associated with coal, as well as dry, break and liquid bulk.

The facility plans to incorporate the latest technology and specialised equipment to ensure a quick turnaround of vessels.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create 122 jobs.

Capital Expenditure
The project entails a capital investment of about R285-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The container facility is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2028.

Latest Developments
An agreement has been signed between the Grindrod Eyamakhosi Joint Venture and TNPA.

Grindrod CEO Xolani Mbambo has said that the company aims to create a “smart logistics hub” in partnership with Eyamakhosi while creating jobs.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
