Provisional duties imposed on clear float glass imports from Tanzania
The South African Revenue Service has, following a request made by tariff advisory body the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (Itac) decided that provisional duties will be imposed on imports of clear float glass from Tanzania, implementing these provisional measures on January 23.
This imposition of provisional duties is based on a preliminary finding by Itac that there was sufficient information to indicate that the dumping of clear float glass is indeed taking place, and that the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) industry was experiencing material injury and threat of material injury because of the dumped imports from Tanzania.
Float glass manufacturer PFG Building Glass had made an application to Itac in which it alleged that the dumping of clear float glass imported from Tanzania was taking place. PFG Building Glass is the only manufacturer of the product in the Sacu region, Itac says.
Itac invited public comments on its preliminary findings. Interested parties could submit written comments within 14 days from the release of the preliminary report and determination, which had been published on January 12.
Clear float glass is sold in its existing form to glass merchants for general end use applications, such as residential glazing, architectural glazing, picture framing and furniture manufacturing. Its toughened form is also used in the automotive, building, industrial and furniture markets.
