Name of the Project
R573 Moloto road upgrade.

Location
The Moloto road connects South Africa’s Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces.

Project Owner/s
South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

Project Description
The project entails the upgrade of the 138 km R573 Moloto road.

The upgrade is one of the strategic infrastructure projects being undertaken by government to revive the South African economy.

The project involves straightening the road, as well as constructing effective barriers and two lanes of traffic in each direction, with high-mast lighting to ensure safer driving at night.

The project forms part of the Moloto Corridor, which will include investment in passenger rail services to connect Gauteng with Mpumalanga and Limpopo. The road will not be tolled.

Potential Job Creation
A minimum of 30% of the contract value on all Sanral projects is subcontracted to qualifying small-, medium- and micro-enterprises, while at least 12 500 jobs are expected to be created throughout the project duration.

Capital Expenditure
R15-billion.

Duration
The project is expected to take 36 months to complete.

Latest Developments
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said on November 3 that significant progress had been made on the upgrade of Moloto road, but noted that the complexity of the project would increase going forward, owing to long stretches where people had settled on the road reserve.

Sanral has, to date, invested more than R4.5-billion on the Moloto road upgrade.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
KPMM-Chauke Business Enterprises Joint Venture (JV) (Phase 1 of the upgrade in Limpopo) and Raubex, Khulupala Trading, Themolo and BizAfrika (Mpumalanga JV partners).
