Independent power producer Red Rocket has achieved commercial operation of both the Rietkloof and Brandvalley wind farms, on the border of the Western and Northern Cape provinces.

Red Rocket was awarded two preferred bidder projects in October 2021 under Bid Window 5 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Both projects comprise 32 Vestas wind turbines with a nameplate capacity of 144 MW each. Each farm will generate about 585 GWh/y of clean electricity.

This is expected to avoid 620 000 t/y of CO2-equivalent emissions per site.

“In what has been widely regarded as a challenging and extremely competitive bid window round, being awarded preferred bidder status, reaching financial close, navigating construction in tough conditions and ultimately bringing it all to light is an achievement we are proud of,” says Red Rocket COO Luca Silva.

He adds that Rietkloof and Brandvalley are among the first projects of the fifth bid window to have reached financial close and commercial operation.

While Red Rocket led the coordination of construction activities at the Rietkloof Wind Farm, local engineering, procurement and construction contractors Power Construction and Besamandla undertook the balance of plant and grid connection of the facility.

The consortium behind the Rietkloof Wind Farm, with Red Rocket as the lead member, includes shareholders African Infrastructure Investment Managers, Jade-Sky Energy and the Red Rocket Opportunity Trust.
