Name of the Project
Red Sands battery energy storage system (BESS) project.

Location
The project will span an estimated 5 ha in the Northern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Independent power company Globeleq and project partner African Rainbow Energy & Power.

Project Description
The project was awarded preferred bidder status in 2024 under the South African government’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, or BESIPPPP.

It is the largest standalone BESS plant in Africa to reach commercial close and will involve the construction of a 153 MW/612 MWh BESS project.

The project includes substantial upgrades to State-owned power utility Eskom’s and the National Transmission Company South Africa’s (NTCSA’s) grid infrastructure.

Potential Job Creation
Job creation figures have not been disclosed.

Capital Expenditure
While capital expenditure has not been confirmed, an evaluation price released when the project was identified as a preferred bidder was R16.9-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The project reached commercial close in June 2025 when the project agreements were signed with the Department of Electricity and Energy, and the NTCSA.
