Renewable-energy deal to power Queensland’s coal export network
Queensland’s coal export supply chain is set for a renewable-energy boost, with government-owned generator CleanCo signing an agreement to supply green power to freight operator Aurizon, which runs Australia’s largest electrified rail freight system.
Under the deal, CleanCo will meet about 25% of Aurizon’s electricity needs from renewable sources, including the MacIntyre wind farm in the Western Downs, the Kaban wind farm in Far North Queensland and the Woolooga solar farm north of Brisbane.
The Crisafulli government said in a statement this week that the partnership would enhance the competitiveness of Queensland’s steelmaking coal exports while supporting the state’s transition to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.
Treasurer and Energy Minister David Janetzki said the deal showed how government-owned energy companies were directly backing regional industries.
“Regional Queensland is at the heart of our economy, and partnerships like this show how reliable, sustainable energy is keeping those industries strong,” Janetzki said.
He added that major employers such as Aurizon adopting renewable energy sent “a powerful signal across the supply chain” and gave regional businesses confidence to invest and create jobs.
CleanCo CEO Tom Metcalfe said the agreement highlighted how the company’s renewable-energy portfolio could help exporters meet growing global demand for low-emission supply chains.
“Queensland’s exporters are under increasing pressure to demonstrate lower-emission supply chains, and this partnership shows how CleanCo can help deliver that,” Metcalfe said.
Aurizon MD and CEO Andrew Harding said the partnership aligned with the company’s goal of achieving net-zero operational emissions by 2050.
