Rio-Carb
Gauteng-based Rio-Carb is a manufacturer of long-life liners that protect materials-handling equipment, mostly for the mining industry.
The liners are made of chromium carbide alloys, which are fused onto a mild-steel backing and are excellent for ‘sliding’ abrasion in chutes, hoppers and bins, besides others.
All the liners manufactured by Rio-Carb are permanently plasma etched, and a large data bank is kept to record dimensions and details of every liner made during the last ten years for quick identification and replacement.
Established 30 years ago as a joint venture between Rio Tinto and Martin Maine, the company is currently 74%-owned by the Maine family, with 26% held by Indrani Govender.
Rio-Carb’s factory, at 13 Barium street, in Alrode, east of Johannesburg, boasts a covered area of 7 200 m2 and is equipped with four cladding lines, a flat welding bed, a high-precision ESAB plasma cutter, electronically controlled stud-welding facilities, 20 kW pyramid rolls for final flattening, a 200 t hydraulic press, an MIG welding bay and quality-control laboratory equipment. Rio-Carb’s associate company, Aquajet Profiles, makes Corex templates used for trial fittings on refurbishing jobs that do not have their original drawings.
The company, which employs 23 people, has, in the recent past, supplied liners for 16 T skip liner kits for various platinum mines, for the refurbishment of a diamond-recovery plant in the Northern Cape and for the refurbishment of wharf decks for a large sinter plant in Newcastle.
Rio-Carb has also supplied liners for what is reportedly the largest bin ever made in South Africa for ore control and for the world’s largest rope-line fabricated bucket, built by Van Reenen Steel, which, like Rio-Carb, is based in Alrode.
