Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm said on Wednesday the company sees huge demand growth for lithium, particularly in stationary batteries, after the company reported half-yearly results.

"All the fundamentals are telling us that our bid into lithium is exactly at the right time and we will develop an amazing business in years to come," Stausholm told a press conference.

The miner bought US-based lithium producer Arcadium for $6.7-billion earlier this year, and is partnering with Chilean state entities on two other projects.
