Name of the Project
Sabodala-Massawa mine solar photovoltaic (PV) plant.
Location
Kedegou region, Senegal.
Project Owner/s
Endeavour Mining.
Project Description
Endeavour has decided to move ahead with the 37 MWp PV solar facility capable of generating about 73 GWh/y solar energy. The plant will complement the 36 MW heavy-fuel oil power plant that is being expanded as part of a brownfield expansion at the Sabodala-Massawa mine.
A 16 MW battery system will also be built to regulate power supply and ensure that fewer generators are required.
The project will significantly lower fuel consumption and power costs while reducing greenhouse-gas emissions once commissioned.
The solar plant will enable operations to function with only one generator active during clear-sky days. The hybridisation of the heavy fuel oil power plant will allow for savings of about 13-million litres of fuel and a 24% reduction in CO2 emissions a year, equivalent to 39 600 t of CO2, while reducing overall power cost by an estimated 22% a year.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
The capital for the solar facility is expected to amount to $55-million.
Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be commissioned in early 2025.
Latest Developments
Construction of the power plant has been completed, with the first power injected into the site grid in the fourth quarter of 2024. Commissioning and ramp-up to nameplate power generation are under way.
Key Contracts and Suppliers
Dornier Suntrace (engineer).
