Segele mine inaugurated in Ethiopia
Euronext- and Frankfurt-listed Akobo Minerals, alongside the Ethiopian government, has announced the official inauguration of the Segele mine, in the Gambella region.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed joined the ceremony on November 20, which included a gold pour as a symbolic act. The gold pour yielded 6.5 kg of gold.
Several key dignitaries and Akobo Minerals staff attended the inauguration ceremony. Ahmed was accompanied by Gambella region president Alemitu Umod and Minister of Mines Habtamu Tegegne as they toured the Segele mine facility, observing its technologies and operations.
Ahmed’s speech highlighted the transformative potential of the mine for Ethiopia's economic diversification and the empowerment of local communities.
"The Segele mine is a testament to Ethiopia's vast potential in the mining sector and the importance of international partnerships to realise this potential. We are proud to see this project reach a significant milestone, benefitting not only the national economy but also the communities around it,” he said.
Akobo CEO Jørgen Evjen addressed the attendees and commended the efforts of the Akobo and Etno Mining teams in preparing for the inauguration.
"The inauguration of the Segele mine is a defining moment for Akobo Minerals. This project is the result of years of dedication, collaboration and innovation. We are especially grateful to the Ethiopian government, the Gambella region and the local community for their . . . support,” he said.
Umod also addressed the gathering, emphasising the regional benefits of the Segele mine, including job creation, improved infrastructure and enhanced opportunities for local communities. She expressed her gratitude to Akobo for its commitment to the region's growth and development.
The Segele mine is expected to contribute to Ethiopia's export revenues and local employment opportunities.
Akobo has invested in its exploration and mining operations, alongside several community development initiatives. These aim to advance local job creation, support local education, improve healthcare and enhance infrastructure to ensure the project's long-term success and positive impact on the surrounding area.
