Sensor data collection from off-grid assets
A compact, low-power, dual-mode remote telemetry unit (RTU) built to serve critical infrastructure operators with widely dispersed assets was recently launched by Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity solutions company Ground Control.
The new RockBLOCK RTU micrologger from Ground Control uses dual-mode Iridium and non-terrestrial networks (NTN) narrowband- (NB-) IoT or cellular connectivity, giving it global reach and making it ideal for simple daily or event-triggered monitoring of specific parameters.
Purpose-built for remote monitoring, the device captures and transmits sensor data by means of Iridium short burst data (SBD), NTN NB-IoT or cellular, offering a seamless, low-cost way to retrieve critical information from even the most hard-to-reach locations. This makes it especially useful for water utilities and environment-monitoring teams that need to collect small but important data points, such as tank levels, flow rates, or pressure, on a daily or event-driven basis from sites well beyond the reach of terrestrial or Long Range Wide Area Networks.
Key features include:
- Dual-mode connectivity: Iridium SBD and NTN NB-IoT for global, always-on coverage
- Ultralow-power consumption: Ideal for solar or battery-powered deployments
- Sensor compatibility: Supports analogue and digital sensor inputs
- Compact and rugged: Built for tough field conditions with minimal installation overhead
Pilot projects are currently underway in the UK and North America, with the dual-mode Iridium/cellular version immediately available and the NTN NB-IoT-enabled devices soon to be ready for customer testing.
