Location
Uvinza, in Tanzania, to Musongati, in Burundi.

Project Owner/s
The government of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Railways Corporation, and the government of Burundi, through the Ministry of Infrastructure.

Project Description
The railway will span 282 km – from Uvinza to Musongati – and will comprise 240 km of the main line and 42 km of passing loops.

The project will consist of two sections: the first from Uvinza to Malagarasi, covering 180 km, and the second from Malagarasi to Musongati, covering 102 km. 

The project will also include the construction of a 1-km-long bridge connecting Tanzania and Burundi, designed to accommodate railway and road traffic.

It will also feature seven railway stations and one cargo terminal at Musongati. The design and construction will adhere to the same standards as other ongoing standard-gauge railway, or SGR, sections in Tanzania.

Potential Job Creation
The project has created employment opportunities for Tanzanians and has provided numerous business contracts.

Capital Expenditure
The project will cost about $ 2.15-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be completed within 72 months, including a 12-month observation period.

The project will be undertaken by a consortium of Chinese companies – China Railway Engineering Group Co, and China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group Co.
