Small Harbours Programme, South Africa

Name of the Project
Small Harbours Programme.
Location
South Africa.
Project Owner/s
South African Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI).
Project Description
A programme is under way to upgrade and maintain small harbours in neglected coastal towns to a functional state.
The small harbours are the first to be built by a democratic government in post-apartheid South Africa.
The Spatial Economic Development Frameworks (SEDF) has designated areas and sites for this expansive port infrastructure investment signalling a turning point for inclusive and sustainable economic development for coastal communities.
The SEDF recommends that the first new small harbour be built in Port Shepstone, in KwaZulu-Natal. Two other sites have been identified, in Port Edward and Hiberdene.
The DPWI has already submitted the SEDF for Port St Johns, in the Eastern Cape, with Port Nolloth, in the Northern Cape, the next site expected to receive its SEDF.
Potential Job Creation
The DPWI has said the economic impact of the development of the small harbour at Port Shepstone will add about R4.41-billion in added business sales, about R1.85-billion in GDP and about 5 808 jobs to the KwaZulu-Natal economy.
