Following the South Africa Photovoltaic Industry Association’s (SAPVIA’s) AGM on July 3, the industry body says the South African solar PV industry has recommitted itself to being an active participant in delivering an energy-secure future for everyone in the country.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of the recently launched South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM), debates on a considered approach in protecting and developing the industrial value chain, the finalisation of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and the development of the grid network and ensuring better access to it.

“As the voice for the solar PV industry, our gathering held significant importance for the future of solar. It was an important platform for everyone who works in solar to join us and take part in discussions around topics that affect our members and by implication, the nation’s energy plans,” says SAPVIA CEO Dr Rethabile Melamu.

Key highlights from the AGM included a reflection on the industry body’s performance for the financial year ended March 31; input from SAPVIA’s Working Groups on industry challenges and opportunities; a presentation of the strategic priorities for 2025/26; and a reaffirmation of the industry’s role in driving localisation, grid access and energy resilience.

SAPVIA also announced the election of Jonathan Frick, DeVilliers Botha, Khotso Selokoma and Mike Mangnall to its governing committee as commissioners.

The association says these individuals will play a key role in guiding SAPVIA’s strategic vision and advancing the interests of the solar PV industry in South Africa.

SAPVIA INDUSTRY AWARDS

Meanwhile, SAPVIA introduced its inaugural Industry Awards, celebrating excellence, innovation and impact across the solar PV sector. These awards recognise individuals and organisations who are helping to shape a dynamic and inclusive energy future for South Africa.

Winners included the SOLA Group; African Women in Energy and Power NPC; Wetility; SolarAfrica Energy; Onvlee Engineering; GreenCape’s ASDU; GREEN Solar Academy; and SEM Solutions.

SAPVIA has extended its congratulations to all the winners and finalists for their “exceptional contributions” to the growth and transformation of the solar PV industry.

"The solar PV industry is at a pivotal moment, both globally and here at home.

“While the immense potential of solar energy to alleviate our energy crisis and drive economic growth is undeniable, we must carefully navigate policies that could inadvertently hinder this progress.

“SAPVIA is committed to leading these crucial discussions to ensure a thriving and sustainable future for solar PV in South Africa,” it says.
