Insect-based animal-feed solutions producer Maltento has grown its production capacity and is now expanding into the EU and UK.

The Cape Town-based company already achieved its EU export certification three years ago.

Maltento says it is set to supply its “premium, high-protein ingredients” to wild bird feed suppliers and petfood companies across the UK and EU.

Maltento leverages the biotechnology of the black soldier fly to produce dried larvae for feed that contains 45% protein and 27% fat.

The farming company uses spent brewers grain as the primary diet for its insects.

“Our entry into the European market marks an exciting milestone for Maltento,” says CEO Dean Smorenburg.

“Our facility and years of expertise have resulted in a superior feed option that meets the highest quality standards for wild bird nutrition.

“Our larvae are produced using a regenerative, closed-loop system that repurposes hundreds of thousands of kilograms of agroprocessing waste into a valuable, eco-friendly product.”

The company’s expanding global footprint follows four years of growth in the US.
