Globally diversified mining and metals company South32 has received approval from the Western Australian Minister for Environment for its Worsley mine development project, marking a key milestone in its efforts to secure bauxite resources for the continued operation of Worsley Alumina.

The decision follows an extensive environmental review process initiated in 2019.

The project is crucial for sustaining alumina production, supporting the South West region’s economy and maintaining Worsley Alumina’s competitive edge in the global alumina sector.

As one of the region's largest employers, the operation plays a significant role in providing jobs for thousands of workers and contractors.

Worsley Alumina is a certified Aluminium Stewardship Initiative operation and contributes to aluminium production – a vital element in the global energy transition.

Approval by the Western Australia government reflects an improved position compared with the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority’s July assessment and aligns with appeal outcomes announced on December 13.

With state approval secured, South32 anticipates Federal approval in early 2025.
