Licensed electricity trader Discovery Green has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement with Southern Sun, under which more than 90% of the hospitality group’s consumption across seven flagship sites will be met from wheeled renewable energy.

Southern Sun’s Arabella Hotel, Golf and Spa, Drakensberg Sun, Garden Court Morningside, Southern Sun Katherine Street, Southern Sun Sandton, Champagne Sports Resort, and Sabi River Sun Resort will be supplied from Discovery Green’s renewable portfolio, including Phase 2 of Red Rocket’s Overberg Wind Farm, which is currently under construction.

The 158 MW wind farm is located near Swellendam in the Western Cape and will deliver over 489 GWh yearly once in commercial operation. The project is expected to begin delivering electricity in 2027.

Southern Sun CEO Marcel von Aulock described the partnership as an important step in the group’s sustainability programme.

“Securing cost-effective renewable energy for our flagship properties not only reduces our carbon footprint but also assures guests that their stay supports South Africa’s transition to a cleaner energy future.”

The statement notes that the hospitality industry is not energy-intensive, but asserts that the sector stands to benefit from renewables both through a lowering of tariffs, as well as by meeting growing consumer demand for responsible travel.

In the statement, Discovery Green head Andre Nepgen said the deal to supply Southern Sun’s iconic hotels and resorts was in line with its broader goal of unlocking renewable energy access for all businesses in South Africa.

In May, Discovery Green and Sasol launched a new venture called Ampli Energy to supply wheeled renewable electricity to small and medium-sized enterprises that are seeking to reduce their carbon footprints but which are not in a position to sign multidecade supply agreements.
