Specialised industrial development initiatives are helping to develop aerospace, defence companies – dtic
Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Alexandra Abrahams says the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s (dtic's) specialised industrial development instruments designed for the aerospace and defence sector are supporting innovative local companies.
Stellenbosch-based advanced technology company Reutech Radar Systems, which serves the defence, mining, industrial and commercial sectors, benefitted from various industrial development instruments, such as the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative, the National Industrial Participation Programme and the Export Development and Promotion programme.
These initiatives address various strategic priorities, including supplier development and the advancement of a strategic industry, while also promoting the development of innovative technology, and enhancing coordination and export promotion to boost trade performance in global markets, she says.
Innovation capabilities will go a long way in boosting South Africa’s competitiveness in global markets, overall economic performance and help to address problems of unemployment.
Companies in the aerospace and defence sector, such as Reutech, provide significant, skilled employment, says Abrahams.
Further, the GDP multiplier of high-technology sectors varies, but estimates suggest that a one percentage point increase in the growth rate of defence expenditure is associated with an approximate 2.67 percentage point increase in defence exports, she says.
South Africa's aerospace, maritime and defence sector invests about R500-million a year in technology development and research, and provides employment to about 12 500 highly skilled engineers, technicians and artisans, she says.
“The dtic remains committed to advancing economic growth and job creation in the aerospace and defence sector,” she says.
