Stellar extends MoU on infrastructure adjacent to Heemskrik project
Minerals explorer and developer Stellar Resources has extended a memorandum of understanding (MoU) over the Comstock plant site for another six months, as it evaluates the potential to integrate existing mine infrastructure into development plans for its Heemskirk tin project on Tasmania’s west coast.
The nonbinding agreement with Australian Hualong covers a site immediately adjacent to Heemskirk and includes tailings storage facilities (TSF), grid power access, water supply, a waste rock dump, a run-of-mine pad, and other office and plant infrastructure. The area is just 4 km from the Heemskirk project.
The infrastructure is being assessed as part of Stellar’s prefeasibility study (PFS), which is considering multiple development models including a standalone operation, toll treatment through existing facilities or a hybrid of both.
The 2024 scoping study evaluated the project as an underground operation with a small surface footprint, using Tasmania’s renewable grid power and, as part of the PFS, the company is investigating options to incorporate existing regional infrastructure where practical.
Accordingly, Stellar has engaged several consultants, including local engineering groups, to evaluate the most suitable TSF facility for the project with Comstock being evaluated against the current proposed site and other nearby locations in the region.
The MoU is nonbinding between the parties and Stellar has a six-month exclusivity period from the date of signing with an exclusion on the Tenth Legion iron project.
Stellar aims to become a producer of 3 000 t/y to 3 500 t/y of payable tin over the first six to ten years of production at Heemskirk. The PFS studies are highly focused on advancing towards this goal by improving upon the base case scoping study of 1 900 t/y over a 12-year mine life.
