Thor Wind Farm, Denmark – update
Name of the Project
Thor Wind Farm.
Location
Danish North Sea, about 22 km from Thorsminde, on the west coast of Jutland.
Project Owner/s
RWE Renewables.
Project Description
RWE plans to build Denmark’s biggest offshore wind power plant to date, with the capacity to produce enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one-million Danish households.
The 1 000 MW wind farm will comprise 72 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW and a 236-m-diameter rotor with a swept area of 43 500 m2.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create up to 60 permanent jobs.
Capital Expenditure
Not stated.
Planned Start/End Date
Installation of the turbines at sea is expected to begin in 2026. The project is planned to start operation no later than the end of 2027.
Latest Developments
RWE has started a geophysical survey off the Danish west coast. Up to three survey vessels will be deployed to conduct a detailed preconstruction survey, including a search for unexploded ordnance (UXO), about 34 km off the coast of Thorsminde.
The data acquired is important and will define the cable routes and exact turbine locations for the offshore wind farm.
To complete this work, RWE has appointed Fugro, a global leading Geo-data specialist, which already conducted a comprehensive geotechnical site investigation for Thor in 2022.
The UXO campaign for RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm will run until December 2023.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Siemens Gamesa (wind turbines) and Furgo (geotechnical site investigation).
