From Creamer Media in Johannesburg, this is the Real Economy Report.

Sashnee Moodley:

Tiger Brands last month hosted a tour of its Albany Belville bakery in the Western Cape to discuss the group’s progress in a bakery restoration initiative it launched in March, as well as its growth targets for the province. Marleny Arnoldi visited the site.

Marleny Arnoldi:

Tiger Brands is the market-leading bread supplier in all provinces of the country except the Western Cape, where it has a 20% market share. Nationally Tiger Brands sells 1.3-million loaves of bread a week from nine bakeries across the country.

The Bellville bakery has the capacity to produce 12 000 loaves an hour on two baking lines, with the three-hour baking process starting with raw material unloading, mixing with water, dough division and rounding before it undergoes moulding, rising and baking.

The bakery increased its production from 64-million loaves in the 2017 financial year to 80-million loaves by the 2023 financial year.

Tiger Brands uses intelligence-based approached to pricing and marketing to ensure a targeted strategy on pricing, sales and profits, particularly in the Western Cape with its unique consumer preferences. Tiger Brands bakeries director for coastal regions Aupa Mofokeng elaborates.

Marleny Arnoldi:

Tiger Brands ultimately aims to have Albany become South Africa’s most loved bread brand by being the lowest per unit cost producer and delivering superior quality with a relentless focus on efficiencies to drive sustainable and profitable growth.

Tiger Brands has evolved its Albany brand positioning to be more real and relevant to consumers and their daily lives, as well as making more positive community impacts. Mofokeng shares his insight.

Marleny Arnoldi:

The company’s bakery restoration initiative has been focused on recovering volumes in the inland region, reducing stock-keeping unit complexity, optimising depots, benchmarking bakeries, managing revenue better, delivering consistent quality and reducing costs.
