Two aerospace research projects under spotlight
PLANE SAILING The newly developed Jonker Sailplane aims to push the boundaries of aerodynamics, materials, and manufacturing techniques
Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI), an initiative of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in conjunction with prominent aerospace design company Ontrack Technologies, reports its ongoing support of two projects currently under way.
The projects listed are the development of the Jonker Sailplanes JS5 open-class glider and the creation of a near-vibrationless engine, both of which exemplify Ontrack Technologies’ commitment to fostering young talent in the aerospace sector.
Through this partnership, the company has successfully engaged and nurtured young engineers in key projects, fostering their professional growth while making significant advancements in the field.
The development of youth in Ontrack Technologies’ AISI-supported projects, particularly these two projects, exemplifies the company’s commitment to fostering young talent in the aerospace sector.
Additionally, through these projects, young engineers are given the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research, enhance their skills, and develop into future leaders in the industry.
Gliding to Fame
The Jonker Sailplanes JS5 open-class glider project, which represents a major endeavour within Ontrack Technologies, is driven by a team of five newly graduated engineers.
The glider’s development aims to push the boundaries of aerodynamics, materials, and manufacturing techniques.
The involvement of young engineers in this project not only showcases their technical skills but also allows them to gain invaluable hands-on experience in a “cutting-edge aerospace venture”.
The project serves as a platform for these engineers to enhance their knowledge and expertise, establishing a strong foundation for their future careers.
The second project, which is led by two young engineers who serve as the lead design and project engineers, focuses on the development of a near-vibrationless engine.
The objective of this endeavour is to design an engine with significantly reduced vibrations, which has implications for various aerospace applications.
Important Potential
Ontrack Technologies recognises the importance of leveraging the potential of young talent and actively involves them in AISI-supported projects.
The company provides a conducive environment for these engineers to learn, innovate, and collaborate with experienced professionals.
The use and development of youth in these projects have several key benefits, including skills enhancement, professional growth, innovation and creativity as well as offering leadership opportunities.
In addition the successful completion and full production of the Jonker Sailplanes JS5 glider and the engine projects have a significant impact on job creation.
As these projects move towards commercialisation, the increased demand for these “cutting-edge products” necessitates the expansion of manufacturing facilities and the establishment of supply chains,
creates job opportunities and opens avenues for apprenticeships and internships, allowing aspiring youth to gain practical experience and contribute to the growth of the aerospace industry.
The company concludes that its partnership with the CSIR serves as a model for leveraging collaborative efforts between academia and industry to empower and advance the youth in the field of aerospace engineering.
