Name of the Project
Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm.

Location
Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Coal producer Seriti Resources and its renewable-energy subsidiary Seriti Green.

Project Description
Ummbila Emoyeni has been designated as a Strategic Integrated Project by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. The wind farm will be the first renewable-energy project to be developed in Mpumalanga.

The project forms part of the coal miner’s strategy of diversifying its offering in a sustainable way to play its role in the country’s just energy transition journey.

The initial 155 MW phase is the first of eight for the planned 900 MW renewable-energy cluster.

The full project will comprise five wind farms, a solar PV generator and a battery storage facility, while construction also includes the largest new main transmission substation built in Mpumalanga for over 20 years.

Once built, the wind farm will result in more than 75% of the energy consumption from Seriti’s existing operations switching from coal to renewable energy, helping to mitigate its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions.

The overall project will also include 800 MWh of storage capacity.

Potential Job Creation
CEO Peter Venn reported on October 14 that thousands of people were gaining skills and employment in the renewables sector, with on-site employment having reached 1 200 and expected to grow to 2 000 as construction continues.

Capital Expenditure
The energy cluster will involve R25-billion investment.

Seriti Resources has partnered with Standard Bank, Rand Merchant Bank and Venn Energy in the financing and development of the 155 MW project, which is estimated at R4.5-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction of the first phase has started with completion expected in the second quarter of 2026.

Latest Developments
The third 155 MW phase of the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm has entered into construction after achieving financial close.

The initial two phases reached financial close in 2024 and August 2025 respectively, and Seriti Green reports that 25 wind turbines have been installed near Bethal, Davel and Morgenzon.

The first 155 MW phase of the development is almost complete and will start delivering electricity in early 2026, while the third phase advanced to financial close after securing long-term funding from Standard Bank, RMB and ABSA.

Ummbila Emoyeni’s first three phases, representing a combined 465 MW, are now under construction.

One-third of the electricity generated will power Seriti Resources’ mining operations, while the remaining two-thirds will be traded through the NOA Group and Energy Exchange of Southern Africa.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Vanguard (transport).
