Umoyilanga Energy hybrid facility, South Africa – update

Name of the Project
Umoyilanga Energy hybrid facility.
Location
Northern and Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
A consortium involving EDF power solutions, a subsidiary of the French utility EDF Group, and investment company Perpetua Holdings.
Project Description
The 75 MW hybrid facility will comprise solar PV, wind, and a battery energy storage system.
The project will operate as a virtual power plant, combining generation from two sites that are 900 km apart. Avondale, in the Northern Cape, will include 115 MW of solar PV and 30 MW/90 MWh of battery storage, while Dassiesridge, in the Eastern Cape, will incorporate 63 MW of wind and 45 MW/115 MWh of battery storage.
To meet its 75 MW dispatchable profile, Dassiesridge will charge batteries from the wind energy generated at night and discharge power in the morning until the sun rises. The solar installation at Avondale will supply the bulk of the energy during the day, supplemented by wind energy from Dassiesridge. Excess solar energy will be used to charge the batteries at Avondale, which will discharge after sunset.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
Not disclosed.
Planned Start/End Date
Dassiesridge entered into provisional commercial operation on December 5, 2025, following a two-year construction phase.
Umoyilanga project director Gregoire de Montgolfier has said that the company aims to achieve its full commercial operations date (COD) as early as possible in 2026.
Latest Developments
The Dassiesridge facility will now start delivering a “net dependable capacity of 55 MW to the grid”, in line with the terms of the power purchase agreements signed with the National Transmission Company South Africa on August 30, 2023.
The provisional period will continue until Umoyilanga achieves its full COD upon the commissioning of the Avondale plant.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Power Construction and Adenco (balance of plant); and Vestas (wind turbines).
