US tungsten miner sees opportunity as tariffs loom for Canada, Mexico
Tungsten miner American Tungsten said on Tuesday that it was committed to bolstering domestic tungsten supply in the US following President Donald Trump’s pledge to move forward with tariff actions against Canada and Mexico.
Tungsten, designated as a critical mineral by the US government, is used extensively in defence, aerospace, and high-performance manufacturing. American Tungsten, one of the few US-based tungsten miners, framed the looming trade restrictions as an opportunity to expand domestic production and mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities.
“We recognise the potential impacts these tariffs may have on our industry and our stakeholders,” said CEO Murray Nye. “However, as one of the few US-based tungsten miners, we believe this recent development underscores the importance of domestic production to mitigate supply chain disruptions and reduce reliance on foreign imports.”
If enacted, the tariffs could place Canadian and Mexican suppliers at a cost disadvantage, shifting demand toward domestic producers. The company expects that industrial and government buyers may increasingly seek tariff-free tungsten from within the US.
American Tungsten also said its planned mining operations in Idaho would contribute to job creation and economic growth in the region.
The potential policy shift highlights the broader push for resource independence as the US seeks to reduce reliance on foreign sources of critical minerals. Commentators have cautioned, however, that while tariffs may incentivise domestic mining, they could also drive up prices for manufacturers reliant on tungsten inputs, potentially straining supply chains in the short term.
American Tungsten, formerly Demesne Resources, is primarily engaged in the acquisition and exploration of magnetite mineral properties.
