WASTE NOT

21st September 2018

Putting paper in the recycling bin is only the start of a complex process of value creation in which packaging company Mpact is deeply involved. Once the waste is collected from households, reclaimers, or private companies, separate the paper, plastic and other recyclables from the waste that will be directed to landfill sites. The recyclable material is then transported to depots, such as this one in Springs, Gauteng, where paper and plastic are baled according to specified grades. The depot has a baled storage capacity of 30 000 t, and the company’s adjoining mill has a manufacturing capacity of about 350 000 t/y of recycled material. Besides recycling paper, Mpact is also undertaking trials at its plant in Benoni, Gauteng, to manufacture construction boards and pallets using recycled aluminium and plastic.
