As South Africa continues to debate the need to transition away from coal amid climate commitments and load-shedding having eased, what role is renewable energy set to play in the country’s energy mix in future?

Join Creamer Media’s upcoming Renewable Energy webinar on July 30 at 14:00 to discover how South Africa’s renewable energy landscape is changing. A panel of industry experts, led by South African Wind Energy Association CEO Niveshen Govender, will unpack the shifts taking place across the sector.

Panellists include G7 Renewable Energies CEO Dr Kilian Hagemann, FNB Commercial sustainability head Kyle Durham, Ministry of Electricity & Energy acting director-general Subesh Pillay and Discovery Green head Andre Nepgen.

The conversation will explore what is currently driving the market in light of disruptions to the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, and what is needed to scale up investment to levels capable of replacing ageing coal plants and meeting future demand. It will also examine whether South Africa’s grid constraints can be overcome and what role independent transmission projects may play in enabling greater energy access.

Experts will share insights on the reforms still urgently needed to facilitate a competitive generation market, the evolving roles of traders and aggregators, and how State-owned power utility Eskom’s decision to establish a stand-alone renewables business aligns with broader industry changes.

The discussion will further consider whether the right technologies and flexible solutions are being prioritised to ensure energy security as more variable renewable energy enters the mix and, importantly, how this transition can be managed in a way that maintains affordability for households and industry.

This webinar will be streamed live on YouTube and recorded for later viewing. Click here to register.
