Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness hospital projects, South Africa

Name of the Project
Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness hospital projects.
Location
Western Cape, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness (DHW).
Project Description
The project entails the construction of three hospitals – two new builds and a redevelopment project. The Klipfontein and Belhar regional hospitals are planned as new builds, and will ease the pressure on existing facilities. Klipfontein will serve the Cape Town hubs of Athlone, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain and Philippi and, based on 2024 planning, will provide care for between 3 500 and 4 000 people daily.
Klipfontein will be built in phases.
Phase 1 will add 222 beds, Phase 2 will add 196 beds, and Phase 3 will involve the construction of additional wards, bringing the hospital to its maximum capacity of 640 beds.
The Belhar Regional Hospital will provide 642 beds and serve Cape Town’s Tygerberg substructure, the Khayelitsha and Eastern substructures, and the Stellenbosch subdistrict. An estimated 3 500 to 4 000 people a day will use the hospital. The Tygerberg Central Hospital will be redeveloped through a public–private partnership, replacing the current Tygerberg Hospital with a modern tertiary and quaternary facility.
