Wärtsilä to deliver six engines to Senegal power plant by December
Technology group Wärtsilä is gearing up to install six of its 32 model diesel engines at a 17 MW power plant at Moroccon miner Managem’s Boto gold mine, in Senegal.
Wärtsilä was awarded the contract to supply engines and auxiliary equipment at the mine in the first quarter of the year, having been appointed by Africa Power Services (APS) as the main contractor for the power plant’s engineering, procurement and construction.
APS sales support head Romain Darracq says the mine is remotely located with no connection to the country’s grid, hence the need for a reliable power plant to drive operations.
APS chose Wärtsilä for the supply of engines owing to its high-quality offering and best delivery times for fast-tracking the project.
Wärtsilä’s engines offer flexibility with configuration – including alongside renewable energy such as wind and solar – and optimal performance under varied load demands. The engines also help with efficient grid balancing.
The company has an established presence in Africa with its regional office in Dakar supporting African customers’ operations throughout the lifecycle of their power plants.
Wärtsilä’s 32 model engines have a reputation for reliability, having operated successfully for 30 years and delivering more than 8 000 MW of energy to customers globally.
The company expects to have the equipment delivered to site by December, with the plant’s commissioning scheduled for the first quarter next year.
