NYSE-listed Accenture, in collaboration with the Mining Qualification Authority (MQA), Mentec Foundation, National Youth Development Agency, Moses Kotane Research Institute and mining and agriculture services provider Dan Piet, has launched a green offgrid social enterprise franchise.

The flagship Connectivity, Electricity and Education for Entrepreneurship (CE3) initiative is dedicated to advancing domestic and commercial solar installations and aimed at changing the way communities and businesses access and use energy.

The initiative targets addressing the need for alternative energy solutions amid rising electricity costs.

“By promoting solar energy, the initiative offers a viable, cost-effective solution that enhances energy security and reduces financial strain on businesses and households. It is also designed to create job opportunities and empower local entrepreneurs, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

“By focusing on local economic development, the initiative not only addresses energy challenges but also contributes to the broader goal of sustainable development,” says Accenture Africa business executive Khethiwe Nkuna.

Accenture highlights its role in building the foundation for the CE3 initiative, as involving initial investment, supporting communities and farmers, pro bono support and advisory services, as well as mobilising partners.

According to the MQA, the initiative will play an integral role in realising South Africa’s broader goal of achieving a just transition as it contributes to local economic development and job creation, and empowers local entrepreneurs in rural and underserved communities.

The initiative also follows a global trend toward solar adoption accelerated by renewable alternatives' cost efficiency and advancements in batteries and energy storage.

Mentec Foundation also highlights the importance of fostering partnerships to promote innovation in the energy sector.
