South African solar energy company Phelan Green Energy has signed an agreement with United Arab Emirates-based energy storage technology company Enercap for the deployment of a 1.5 GWh Supercap energy storage system.

The battery storage system will significantly enhance Phelan Green Energy's capacity to deliver solar energy around the clock, it says.

The Enercap system uses a patented solid-state encapsulated capacitor technology that surpasses traditional lithium-ion batteries in energy density and lower charge time. It has a long lifespan, no capacity degradation, is safe, environmentally sustainable and recyclable, and uses abundantly available raw materials.

By using this breakthrough system, Phelan Green Energy will be able to provide clean, reliable energy to its global customer base 24 hours a day, the company says.

“This partnership with Enercap is a vital step in boosting the efficiency and competitiveness of our renewable-energy operations,” says Phelan Green Energy chairperson Paschal Phelan.

“With this cutting-edge technology, we can significantly enhance the efficiency and utilisation of our $2.4-billion green hydrogen developments in South Africa and Peru.

“These projects are ahead of their development schedules and will produce upwards of one-million tons of, carbon-free, green ammonia by converting desalinated water into green hydrogen using 100% solar energy,” he says.
