Transformer core solutions provider Alloy Magnetic Cores (AMC) is looking forward to exhibiting at the 2024 Electra Mining Africa exhibition and conference, which will take place from September 2 to 6, at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, in Nasrec, Gauteng.

“Electra Mining is an important event for us, owing to the extensive coverage and reach that is inherent to an event of this size, particularly because it can attract large numbers of local and international visitors, many of whom are potential customers. Electra Mining affords us the ability to meet with new and potential customers, expand our knowledge and keep up-to-date with the ever-changing market,” explains AMC sales manager Gail Botha.

The company – which has specialised in the manufacture of strip wound cores using grain-oriented silicon steel (GOSS) and non-oriented silicon steel (NOSS) since 1984 – supplies C and E Cores, E and I Laminations as well as Jencores (folded cores). AMC also has a sister company: Mitre Core Technologies (MCT), which offers custom-built mitred and 90-degree cores ranging from 5 kVA to 80 MVA. Both companies can boast of recent success in exporting its solutions.

“Our most notable orders are for the local transformer manufacturer market, however in the past two years we have expanded our supply internationally. Two of those most significant orders were for Australia and Chile. The order for our Australian client was for the supply of fully mitred cores using SHG material to improve efficiency by optimising the losses. The Chilean customer on the other hand ordered our Jencores which highlights our diverse range of products” Botha notes.

Australia and Chile are key mining jurisdictions with significant demand for transformers and transformer-related solutions, given the massive, energy-intensive mining operations hosted within the countries.

Moreover, “Australia is quite a challenging market to get into”, notes Botha, pointing to strict regulatory requirements and other potential barriers to entry, however MCT has “managed to meet all the necessary criteria stipulated by the Australian government to be able to export to them”.

Botha points to the company’s ISO 9001:2015 certification, which ensures “top-quality products and traceability”, as well as its “state-of-the-art testing facilities” to verify the no-load losses (NLL) on the various cores.

“All material is pre-tested on our Soken Iron Loss Tester to ensure quality and authenticity of material used, and all products are tested after production on one of our five test benches to guarantee final NLL. We pride ourselves on creating quality products timeously.”

Botha states that the quality control processes ensure that the products are of the highest mechanical and electromagnetic quality and assures readers that AMC/MCT is “always available to discuss any special requirements”.

She comments that all materials are fabricated in-house to facilitate each customer’s personal design, adding AMC keeps a comprehensive range of raw material in stock to meet all requirements that a customer may have.
