Anthem energises Gamma B transmission substation in the Northern Cape
Renewable-energy company Anthem has energised the Gamma B main transmission substation (MTS), which was built over 20 months on behalf of the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA).
The substation is a key part of Anthem's broader 420 MW Northern Cluster Wind Farm, comprising the Khangela, Umsinde and Ishwati Emoyeni projects, which are majority-owned by Anthem and due for completion in the final quarter of this year.
Specifically, the Gamma B MTS provides the critical infrastructure needed to feed renewable energy into the national transmission network and to wheel the electricity to Anthem’s customers – Rio Tinto’s Richards Bay Minerals, Sibanye-Stillwater and NOA Group Trading.
The substation includes extensive 400 kV and 132 kV infrastructure, a 500 MVA transformer, and provision for future feeders and transformers. This means the infrastructure serves the Anthem projects and customers, and this highlights how private energy projects can be used to support grid expansion and stability, the company says.
The Gamma B MTS is a critical step in ensuring the region remains central to South Africa’s energy future and supports national decarbonisation objectives by fully integrating into the NTCSA network. It is located between Victoria West and Murraysburg on the border between the Northern and Western Cape, Anthem says.
“The Gamma B MTS is fully energised, operational and integrated into the national grid, which marks an important milestone for the national grid and our 420 MW Northern Cluster Wind Farm. Gamma is yet another important step forward in South Africa’s Just Energy Transition,” says Anthem CEO James Cumming.
By enabling large volumes of renewable energy to enter the grid, Gamma enables Anthem to serve its customers’ power and decarbonisation needs while also helping build out a more diversified, modern grid and power system, he says.
