ARC to host several continent-focused sessions at Science Summit
Agriculture science body the Agricultural Research Council will be representing Africa’s scientific community at this year’s Science Summit during the UN General Assembly.
The Science Summit will be hosted for the tenth time this year, while the General Assembly is being hosted for the seventy-ninth time, between September 10 and 27 in New York.
The theme for the Science Summit this year is “how science and innovation accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”. It will see thought leaders, policymakers and researchers worldwide gathering to discuss urgent agriculture challenges.
The ARC, as a co-convener of the Science Summit, will spotlight Africa’s role in addressing food security, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture, including through innovations in ruminant production and disease reduction.
Despite agriculture being a major economic sector in Africa, employing more than 60% of the population, the continent remains one of the most food-insecure regions globally, with challenges including low productivity, dependence on rain-fed farming and climate change vulnerability.
“The need for resilient and sustainable agricultural systems has never been more urgent. Through our involvement in the Science Summit, the ARC seeks to drive transformative solutions that support Africa’s agricultural development while addressing global challenges such as climate change and food security,” says ARC CEO and president Dr Litha Magingxa.
The ARC will attend the Science Summit as part of a larger South African delegation led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and which will include representatives from the Department of Science and Innovation, the National Research Foundation and the Human Sciences Research Council.
