Brasco Industrial Filtration: Leading the charge in dust filtration excellence
This article has been supplied.
When a major South African-based board manufacturing company—operating across vast regions from Mpumalanga to the Eastern Cape—needed a robust dust extraction system for its new melamine faced board and off-cut and sander lines at its Boksburg factory, it turned to Brasco Industrial Filtration, the undisputed leader in custom-designed industrial filtration solutions. Partnering with a highly regarded Cape Town-based fan manufacturer, Brasco was tasked with designing, delivering and installing an advanced dust extraction system capable of handling the demanding needs of this high-volume wood waste operation.
Tailored Solutions for Complex Challenges
The brief was clear: design a system that could handle wood dust from multiple take-off points, including several long, complex duct runs stretching over impressive distances. Brasco's engineering team rose to the challenge, crafting a cutting-edge solution that not only met, but exceeded, the customer's expectations.
At the heart of the system were two large, fully automated reverse pulse bag filter units, specifically engineered for the combustible nature of the dust generated. To ensure safe, continuous operation, Brasco installed anti-static filter bags and integrated explosion vents. The filters featured substantial filtration areas—470 m² and 313 m², respectively—ensuring optimal dust collection and maximum efficiency. Additionally, earthing rods and plates were incorporated to prevent static buildup and mitigate potential risks.
Uncompromising Engineering, Seamless Performance
Brasco's design team specified high-performance, belt-driven fans that provide the necessary pressure to handle the large volumes of air. For dust disposal, heavy-duty screw conveyors and rotary valves were used to automate the discharge process from the filter units, ensuring smooth operation and reducing downtime.
The project also required the installation of long runs of galvanized ducting, ranging from 900 mm to 200 mm in diameter, to transport the dust over distances of up to 120 m. Brasco's expert installation ensured that the dust traveled efficiently at optimal speeds, preventing settlement or blockages along the ductwork. The system was engineered for precision, with a careful focus on minimising friction loss and maintaining consistent airflow throughout.
A Perfect Fit, Delivered on Time and on Budget
Given the large air volumes and the extensive footprint of the filtration units, the project presented unique logistical challenges. Brasco’s design team worked closely with the customer to find the perfect locations for the filter units—strategically placed to ensure convenient road access for the customer’s large trucks, which are used for daily operations.
Thanks to Brasco's meticulous planning and seamless coordination, the project was completed on time and well within budget, resulting in a dust extraction system that is both highly efficient and easy to maintain. The customer was thrilled with the outcome, praising the system’s reliability, efficiency and overall effectiveness in meeting their complex needs.
