Calling Education learners explore careers in logistics with Dachser South Africa

School pupils and Dachser staff alike had an enriching day when a group of learners from Calling Education visited Dachser SA’s Cape Town office in October to be exposed to the work environment and learn about careers in logistics. Calling Education, based in Stellenbosch, is a non-profit private school that strives to make a truly excellent education available at a fee affordable to those from low-income communities.
Operations Manager of Dachser Air and Sea Logistics, Marli Wilson, says, “We enjoyed showing the learners some of the projects that we have worked on during the last two years. We also took them through what we do on a daily basis, explaining the different resources that are involved in moving freight over the world.”
After case study presentations, learners were split into teams to join staff working in the air import and export departments where they learnt how shipments are arranged from start to finish. This was followed by a tour of the Dachser warehouse to explain the process flow and storage of goods.
Wilson says the learners were very interactive throughout the day, asking lots of questions and engaging with all the discussion topics. “When they were first introduced, and we asked them what they want to do after school, policemen and firefighters were the careers that came up. When the visit was over, we were very excited when all the learners said that they’d like to work in the freight industry.”
Cape Town Branch Manager Thorkild Nielsen says it was a really inspirational visit for all involved. “It was great for us to see how curious and engaged these young people are when it comes to career opportunities. Our wish for them is to stay so eager, work hard and make a success of their lives. We know they are destined for a great future – hopefully in logistics!”
