Name of the Project
Castellón green hydrogen project.

Location
Castellón refinery, Valencia, Spain.

Project Owner/s
Castellón Green Hydrogen, a joint venture between bp and Iberdrola.

Project Description
bp and Iberdrola plan to build a 25 MW green hydrogen project at bp’s Castellón refinery. It is expected that an estimated 2 800 t/y of green hydrogen could substitute part of the grey hydrogen currently used by the refinery, which is produced from natural gas.

The plant will convert 200 GWh/y of Iberdrola’s renewable energy into green hydrogen that will contribute to bp’s decarbonisation strategy.

The electrolyser will include five modules of 5 MW containerised proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.

The project is expected to avoid the emission of 23 000 t/y of CO2.

Potential Job Creation
This plant could create up to 500 new direct jobs during its construction.

Capital Expenditure
Not disclosed.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be operational in 2026.

Latest Developments
bp and Iberdrola approved the project in September.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
