Changing conditions influence pump choices for African mines

Evolving risk profiles such as deeper underground workings, unpredictable rainfall patterns and rising energy costs, are increasingly influencing the type of pump solutions selected by mining operations.

This is according to Integrated Pump Technology, noting that the choice between diesel-driven and submersible pumps depends on required applications and site-specific conditions.  Diesel-driven auto-priming pumps are suggested for emergency bypasses, stormwater management and pit-lake dewatering, while submersibles are recommended for routine and continuous underground operations or fixed surface installations.

The company explains that surface mines are affected by heavier storm bursts as short, intense downpours can cause sudden pit-lake rises and flooding that demand rapid response to ensure the stability of haul roads and pit floors. In these situations, high throughput diesel-driven pumps mounted on trailers or skids are recommended, as the units can be moved quickly to different locations without relying on fixed electrical infrastructure. In addition, auto-priming diesel pumps are engineered to handle fluctuating inflows without priming delays, making them ideal for unpredictable surface applications.

Mobility is a further consideration on surface mines, particularly in operations where water inflow points shift as pits expand. Diesel-driven solutions with built-in fuel tanks and controls enable reduced setup times and require smaller teams to respond effectively. Pontoon-mounted units can provide effective suction even with fluctuating water levels, reducing the risk of cavitation and protecting pump performance. Surface water often carries abrasive silt and fines, requiring pumps with wear resistant components.

Underground mines face different challenges such as longer declines, wetter stopes and the need for tighter control over electricity usage. Integrated Pump Technology suggests that submersible pumps sized precisely to their duty offer advantages, especially when coupled with automated level controls and start/stop systems to reduce unnecessary run hours. The compact design of submersibles also makes them suited to confined underground environments, eliminating the need for suction lines and reducing potential trip hazards.

Pumps used in underground mines should be equipped with seals, cooling systems and materials that can handle abrasive fines and corrosive conditions. Features such as built-in motor protection, leakage sensors and durable cabling help extend operational life and reduce downtime.

“The best dewatering outcomes come from pairing proven technology with a clear understanding of each mine’s hydraulic realities,” explains Integrated Pump Technology MD Jordan Marsh. “That is why we supply world class brands with long African track records - Grindex for electric submersibles and Godwin for diesel-driven auto-priming units - and the local application know-how to specify them correctly for reliable long-term performance supported by localised support across the region.”

Marsh highlights that Integrated Pump Technology’s approach focuses on ensuring mines receive the right pump as well as correctly matched accessories such as pipework, valves and strainers.  The company also offers service support and rental options, while  further controls, monitoring and telemetry are increasingly integrated into solutions to provide real-time feedback on pump performance, aimed at ensuring issues can be addressed before they become failures.
