The transportation of raw materials to diversified miner South32’s Mozal Aluminium operation is being negatively impacted on by road blockages related to escalating civil unrest in Mozambique.

Mozal Aluminium is the largest industrial employer in the country, consisting of a smelter and transport infrastructure, just west of Maputo.

“We have implemented contingency plans to mitigate operational impacts and we are working with relevant stakeholders. We are withdrawing production guidance for Mozal Aluminium as we respond to the evolving situation,” South32 said in a statement on December 10.

The company said the safety and wellbeing of its employees was its top priority, confirming that the workforce was safe and that there had been no security incidents so far.

Civil unrest has gripped Mozambique since a contentious national election in October, which was marked by claims of voting irregularities and electoral fraud.

Protests erupted following the announcement by the National Elections Commission that the incumbent ruling party Mozambique Liberation Front, or Frente de Libertação Moçambique (Frelimo), had secured yet another victory at the polls.

The democratic socialist Frelimo has ruled the country since its independence from Portugal in 1975.
