Comms committee lauds ‘groundbreaking’ Seacom, ICT SMME chamber MoU
The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies has welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Seacom South Africa and the ICT SMME Chamber.
Portfolio committee chairperson Khusela Sangoni Diko called the MoU a groundbreaking milestone and has urged other big businesses within the sector to emulate the good example set by the parties.
“The MoU means that the organised small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) within the information and communication technology (ICT) space will now benefit from Seacom’s digital offerings, including cloud and connectivity on-premises networking, as well as network and cybersecurity solutions.”
Diversified ICT provider Seacom South Africa has a presence in eight countries and an extensive undersea cable network and fibre grid, enabling corporate clients to tap into digital connectivity and services.
The ICT SMME Chamber helps its ICT SMME members in South Africa to thrive through advocacy, networking, access to market and enterprise development.
“We are particularly pleased that this momentous step forward comes at the back of our successful engagement with various sectors of society in which the committee sought to bring together different role players to coalesce around a common vision,” said Diko in a statement.
In August, the committee had invited the ICT SMME Chamber and other nongovernmental role players to a capacity-building workshop to brief the committee on the status of SMMEs in the ICT sector, as well as the challenges and the opportunities that exist for collaboration between government, the private sector and broader society to deliver on the collective aspirations of a digitally connected future.
